IHG Expands Midscale Footprint with New Garner Hotel in Ahmedabad
IHG Hotels & Resorts has signed a franchise agreement for a 40-key Garner Hotel Ahmedabad Motera, the midscale conversion brand's first property in Ahmedabad and its debut in Gujarat, according to the company's own announcement.

The hotel is scheduled to open in 2029 near the Narendra Modi Stadium — three years out from the signing, which for travelers means: bookmark, don't book.
The Deal, in Practical Terms
Garner is IHG's essentials-segment play — a conversion-friendly midscale brand pitched at guests who want a recognizable chain name, a decent bed, and breakfast without paying premium rates. The Ahmedabad property will be developed by Devpriya Buildcon and managed by United Hospitality Management India, a third-party operator already running other IHG properties across the country.
For international visitors, Garner sits below Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express in IHG's hierarchy. Think functional rooms, standardized breakfast, IHG One Rewards points, predictable service. No boutique flourishes, no spa pretensions. Just the working basics, in theory.
Location and Timing Reality
The site sits at the Motera-Sabarmati junction in North Ahmedabad, within range of three real demand drivers: the Narendra Modi Stadium for cricket and mega-events, the upcoming Sabarmati Bullet Train hub for high-speed rail connectivity, and the surrounding corporate belt. If you arrive for a match, a transit connection, or business meetings in the Sabarmati corridor, the address checks out.
The catch: 2029. Ahmedabad already has functioning mid-range inventory you can actually book tonight — Lemon Tree, a Fairfield by Marriott, and a Holiday Inn Express are all in the market. If you're planning a trip, don't wait on a signing. And if you're tracking India's branded-midscale economics, note that IHG describes Garner as its "global fastest-scaling brand," which tells you where the per-key cost math is heading in tier-1 markets like this one.
Why This Matters Beyond the Press Release
Sudeep Jain, IHG's Managing Director for South West Asia, framed Ahmedabad as a commercial and infrastructure growth center worth expanding into. Deepika Arora of UHM India framed it as another step in a deepening partnership. Standard growth-speak from both — but the underlying logic holds. Branded midscale is filling a genuine gap in secondary metros where independent guesthouses still dominate and international chains are thin on the ground. Motera is a textbook location to test that thesis: event-driven demand, transit adjacency, corporate footfall, and a city that international visitors increasingly route through.
Worth watching is whether the conversion model — turning an existing building into a branded property rather than building greenfield — actually delivers the "accessible price point" IHG is selling. In India's tier-1 cities, that math gets complicated fast. But for now, the file is open, and 2029 is closer than it sounds.
